About the Founder
Law Ching Bor (courtesy name Zhongyong) is a retired school principal, Chinese character artist, and calligraphy educator.
He has practiced for over 60 years and taught for more than 50 years in calligraphy with an unbreakable bond with it throughout life.
In 1999, he earned a Master's degree in Calligraphy Education from the Institute of Chinese Calligraphy Culture at Capital Normal University in Beijing.
He created the "Law Ching Bor Scientific Calligraphy Teaching Method," which applies mechanics, physics, and geometry to the art of writing. He is also the founder of the "Zhong Yong Grid" and a pioneer of "Calligraphy Spiritual Practice."
He excels in various calligraphic scripts and created the unique 'Law Style' many years ago. In recent years, he has achieved a creative breakthrough by pioneering 'Mineral Pigment Calligraphy' (岩彩書法). Building upon a profound foundation in Chinese calligraphy, he utilizes the variations of deep and light ink blended with colored lines to add an abstract artistic dimension, all while maintaining the unique spirit and vigor of traditional calligraphy.
His calligraphy was learned under the tutelage of national treasures, including Dean Ouyang Zhongshi, and renowned Hong Kong masters, Professor Wang Wei Chang and Professor Chen Jing Hong. His traditional Chinese painting was learned under the master of the Lingnan School, Professor Zhao Shao Ang.
Calligraphy Works, Awards & Activities
- 1. In 1995, his work was selected for the 6th National Calligraphy and Seal Carving Exhibition of China and entered its collection.
- 2. In 1996, his Clerical Script Thousand Character Classic was selected for the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial and acquired for the permanent collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art.
- 3. In 1999, his running-regular script work was selected for "A Thousand Works at the Turn of the Century" — the 7th National Calligraphy and Seal Carving Exhibition — and entered its collection.
- 4. In 1999, he was invited to inscribe a stele on the China Changde Poetry Wall, a national cultural project stretching five li (about 1.5 miles). The carved work became a Chinese historical artifact, preserved for posterity.
- 5. In 2016, he held "Practicing Calligraphy, Cultivating Virtue — A Law Ching Bor Calligraphy Exhibition" at the Hong Kong Central Library, filling its 16,000-square-foot hall with more than a hundred of his works in various scripts and sizes.
- 6. In 2020, the Hong Kong Education Bureau invited him to write 39 "Classic Chinese Sayings" in different scripts, each with a short calligraphy analysis. They are published on the Bureau's Chinese Language Education website, free for students, teachers, and the public to view and download.
- 7. He has been invited to take part in many large-scale calligraphy events in Hong Kong and mainland China.
- 8. His works are frequently collected by museums, institutions, organizations, and private collectors.
- 9. From 2021 to 2025, he served as doctoral supervisor for Dr. Cen Yishao's PhD research at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong — the world's first project to combine calligraphy with technology: "Body Calligraphy"1.
Calligraphy Teaching Experience
- 1. Workshop instructor for "Calligraphy and Chinese Culture," a program for principals and teachers run by the Hong Kong Education Bureau, for 7 years.
- 2. Guest lecturer in "Chinese Calligraphy Culture and Calligraphy Learning" at the Chinese Department of the Hong Kong Institute of Education (now the Education University of Hong Kong), for 3 years.
- 3. Calligraphy instructor at the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
- 4. Instructor of "Calligraphy Spiritual Practice" courses at China Graduate School of Theology, for 3 years.
- 5. Instructor of "Calligraphy Spiritual Practice" courses at Alliance Bible Seminary, for 7 years.
- 6. Calligraphy instructor with the Yuen Long District Arts Co-operative for over 30 years.
